There is hardly another European region in which the upheavals, developments and tendencies of Western European history can be better observed than in the old Duchy of Burgundy. It is, in many ways, the heart of Europe.

In the 20th century, it gave birth to the Taizé Community, an ecumenical Christian monastic fraternity founded by the Genevois Brother Roger Schutz in the centre of Burgundy.
